Why the Butterfly Guard Works
The butterfly guard remains one of the most effective guards in both Gi and No-Gi grappling because:
• It allows you to lift and off-balance opponents, even bigger training partners
• It keeps you mobile and attacking, instead of stuck underneath your opponent
• It connects directly to modern grappling positions like X-Guard, Single Leg X, back takes, leg attacks, and wrestle-ups
When used correctly, the butterfly guard becomes a complete attacking system.

Your instructor
I’m Coach Jeff Robison, a 3rd-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt under David Meyer and John Will (Rigan Machado lineage) with over 25 years on the mat. I’ve led Club MMA since 2008 and founded the Focused Fight Team in 2015, coaching athletes at every level of BJJ and MMA. Training around the world shaped my approach to the butterfly guard as a powerful hub for offense—where timing, hooks, and leverage let any body type control the pace.
In The Butterfly Guard, I teach a clear, pressure-tested system built on posture, grips, off-balancing, and seamless transitions to sweeps, back takes, and leg entanglements. My coaching is hands-on and detail-driven: I meet you where you are, explain the “why” behind every move, and use live drills that translate immediately to rolling. I’m passionate about helping students build confidence and a reliable A-game, and I’m excited to share what’s worked for my teams and me on the mat.
